Coach Mike Kafburn grew up in a small town in Washington and discovered his passion for running at a young age. He excelled in cross-country and track during high school, earning a scholarship to run at Oregon State University. Prone to push himself too hard and therefore plagued by injuries, he never accomplished his dreams of running in the Olympics. His dedication and perseverance made him a well-respected teammate and a reliable competitor.
After college, Mike returned to his hometown and eventually settled in Eugene, Oregon. He pursued a career in coaching, driven by a desire to inspire the next generation of runners. Over the years, he developed a stern but fair coaching style, shaped by his own experiences and his high expectations for his athletes.
Mike’s natural skepticism made him attentive to detail. He closely examined every race and practice, keeping intense records. He was known for meticulously planning training routines and race strategies.
Mike’s practical nature and fairness were balanced by his stern demeanor. He wasn’t one for coddling and motivational speeches, but his athletes knew that his tough love came from a place of wanting them to succeed.
Though not widely known outside of Eugene, Coach Kafburn’s impact on his athletes and the community was undeniable.
